Getting Started

The following is a quick step by step guide to help you download, install and setup NS:CO. This guide is intended for the gamer who is new to NS:CO but already has some experience with Quake3 arena and his computer.

Getting Started

Hardware Requirements

Generally your system must meet the minimum system requirements specified by id Software to play Quake III Arena with at least 128Mb RAM; you may with system tuning be able to get by with 96Mb; but less RAM will result in unsatisfactory performance.

As a rough guide for satisfactory performance:

500MHz CPU
Video Graphics Card with at least 32MB RAM
128MB System RAM
300MB free Harddrive space

These are only guidelines for a frustration free setup; many NS:CO fans play with less RAM and old VOODOO video hardware with fantastic results - see the NS:CO First Aid Forum for tweak and performance help.

Hardware Requirements

Software Requirements

NS:CO is Total Conversion or Modification (often abbreviated Mod) for Quake III Arena; you will need a licensed copy of Quake III Arena. You will also need to upgade Quake III Arena to the latest point release (currently version 1.32) available here.

required software:

Quake3: arena installed
Quake3: arena patched to point-release 1.32

Software Requirements

Operating System

NS:CO runs on Windows (9x, NT, 2000, XP), Macintosh computers OS (8.x/OS X), and Linux systems. You should have a clean and stable installation of your operating system and the most recent display drivers for your video hardware for best performance.

We offer comfortable self-installing versions as well as zip versions of the game for people that need to or prefer to manually install the game. Look below for the appropriate distribution of the game files.

Please note that there are two patches (1.91 and 1.91a) that have to be installed over the clean 1.9 install to work properly. The patches only come as zip files.

Installation

For Windows and Macintosh users the installation of NS:CO is as simple as executing the self-installer and making sure it finds your Quake III Arena installation; if you installed Quake III Arena to the default directory NS:CO should be a simple "hands-off" process.

To manually install the game from the zip file distribution you will need a compresstion tool that can extract zip files, preserve long file names and directory structures; WinZip and WinAce are two well know utilities that will do the job but there are many freeware alternatives.

Linux users should follow the instructions in the ReadMe that ship with the installer binary or manually install with the zip.

Installation

Setup & Configuration

NS:CO offers easy menu access to all critical game and system engine settings; those familiar with Quake III Arena or other Q3A Mods should find it a smooth and effortless process.

Note: NS:CO has unique configuration and play features, it is strongly recommended that you read the NS:CO Manual or at least the Quickstart Guide while downloading.
NS:CO has a lot of features (like TASS™ or NSSL™) that unconfigured, unused or misunderstood will make game-play rather disappointing; these features are not complex, difficult understand or use but are unique to NS:CO.
